BOFA (Gus). Zoo. Paris : Éditions Mornay,... - Lot 461 - Ader
BOFA (Gus). Zoo. Paris : Éditions Mornay, 1935. - In-8, 247 x 190 : (70 ff. first blank), illustrated cover. Paperback, filled cover. First edition of this admirable book in which Gus BOFA (1883-1968) humorously but incisively criticizes humanity. "I don't like men very much, but I have a lot of tenderness for animals (...) It's not that they are better than man: they are, as much as he is, ugly, dirty, lazy, thieving, dirty, liars, obscene and cowardly (...) In fact, I don't care so much about proving my friendship to the beasts, as about deserving theirs. I need to be forgiven, by each of them in particular, for the thousand-year-old muflurgy of my whole race towards them". (Preliminary). The edition is illustrated with 72 compositions by the artist, including one on the cover, one on the title and 70 in the text or on full page. Edition of 1210 copies, this one being one of 995 on Navarre paper (n° 274). EXAMPLE WITH A VERY BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL DRAWING BY GUS BOFA, done in graphite and colored pencils, representing "The Unicorn of the Paris Zoo" (24,5 x 18,8 cm). (24,5 x 18,8 cm). This drawing does not bear the signature of the artist but the stamp of his workshop. Cover slightly soiled.
