[CHEVIGNÉ]. Les Contes rémois. Third edition. Paris : Michel Lévy frères, 1858. - In-8, 236 x 154 : portrait, (2 ff.), 239 pp. 1 portrait. Dark blue morocco, double framed with gilt fillets on the boards, gilt laurel leaves on the corners of the central frame, spine decorated with nerves, quadruple gilt fillet inside, gilt edges on witnesses (Lortic fils). Partly original edition, containing 40 tales, i.e. 12 more than in the previous edition of 1843, illustrated in the first printing with two portraits engraved by Jean-Marie Buland after Ernest Meissonier, one representing Chevigné, the other the writer and fabulist Charles-Guillaume Sourdille de La Valette, under which appears for the first time the epistle in verse addressed to him, and with 41 woodcut vignettes, most of them after Meissonier and some after Valentin Foulquier . According to Carteret: "this illustration of the Contes rémois, admirably engraved on wood, will remain as one of the most beautiful romantic productions" (III, p. 158). UNIQUE ISSUE, one of the few reprinted in-8 format on wove paper, with 11 fumed china plates for the vignettes on pages 3, 27, 35, 57, 141, 165, 205, 213, 227, 231 and 235, as well as 17 ORIGINAL AQUARELLES SIGNED BY THE PAINTER, ENGRAVER AND LITHOGRAPHER HENRI-PATRICE DILLON (1850-1909), located at the end of 17 stories. A very fine copy in a binding by Lortic fils. Some foxing and spotting, sometimes heavy.
