MAC ORLAN (Pierre) - CHAS LABORDE. - Lot 556
MAC ORLAN (Pierre) - CHAS LABORDE.
L'Inflation sentimentale.
Paris : La Renaissance du livre, 1922 [1923]. - In-4, 280 x 225 : 87 pp. 1 f., illustrated cover. Bradel red half-box with black box bands, smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Boichot).
First edition of this collection of narrative poems tinged with eroticism, printed in only 140 copies.
"In Sentimental Inflation, Mac Orlan sings of the heavy, sparse turmoil in which the age struggles, those hints of crowds, the sweat of made-up girls, the trams with blue egrets ; He makes a new poetry emerge from the sensuality of a one-eyed hotel, unacknowledged and latent, with its professional perfumes and its customary fevers, which shows its belly, with the metallic fingers of a courtisan typist during the day, mistress of a love worked like a clock, a metal bridge, a dynamo, but perfumed with bad desires. For it is a new figure of the world that Pierre Mac Orlan is trying to bring to light, this face of an industrial and amorous world, the fruit of the love of the engineer and Léa" (Anthologie de la nouvelle poésie française, 1924, p. 329).
The much sought-after edition is illustrated with 21 watercolours by CHAS LABORDE (1886-1941), reproduced in full-page intaglio and enhanced in colour.
One of 120 copies on Hollande Van Gelder paper (n° 82), very well bound and enriched with 3 ORIGINAL AQUARELLES SIGNED BY CHAS LABORDE, two of them glued on the back covers, and the third one glued on cardboard paper mounted on a mitre at the head
.
These three original works come from the Millon sale of 27 November 2013 in which a section was devoted to drawings by Chas Laborde. The two on the back covers, measuring 20.2 x 13.6 and 16.2 x 11.9 cm, respectively represent three circus performers in front of the exit of the big top, and two clown musicians. The third watercolour, measuring 22.2 x 24.4 cm, is entitled La Lâcheté and depicts two men and a woman in a restaurant.
The copy is also enriched with a beautiful L.A.S. from Pierre Mac Orlan, 1 page in-4, November 7, 1951, to Jane Renouard, about his songs.
A very well preserved copy despite transfers of the engravings on the facing leaves.
