VIDAL (Pierre). - Lot 646
VIDAL (Pierre). Paris which shouts. Petits métiers. Paris : for the Friends of books, 1890. - In-8, 234 x 178 : XVI, 132 pp, (2 ff. last blank), illustrated cover. Bradel red half-maroquin with corners, smooth spine decorated with a gilt fleuron, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (V. Champs). First edition published and prefaced by Henri Béraldi, of this pleasant collective work devoted to 30 small trades of Paris. The notes are by Albert Arnal, Henry Spencer Ashbee, Jules Claretie, Abel Giraudeau, Henry Houssaye, Henri Meilhac, Victor Mercier, Eugène Paillet, Jean Paillet, Roger Portalis and Eugène Rodrigues. Two kinds of small jobs are distinguished, first of all the useful jobs or those recognized as such, generally in the morning, as Béraldi tells us, such as the coffee waiter, the dog shearer, the lemonade man, the ice-cream man, etc., and then "the gang of irregulars, the useless, the suspicious, whose role is to make the public highway untenable", which are generally in the afternoon, such as the singer in the courtyard, the pleasure merchant, the car barker, the collector of cigar ends, etc. The physiognomy of these criers has been perfectly represented by the draftsman Pierre Vidal. The edition is thus illustrated with 32 colour compositions by the artist, including a frontispiece, a vignette in the text and 30 full-page figures. Only 120 copies of the edition were printed, this one being one of the 28 printed for the corresponding or assistant members of the Société des Amis des livres, specially printed for Georges Patinot, director of the Journal des Débats. A very fine copy bound by Champs, enriched with a nice original watercolour signed by Pierre Vidal on the false title. Attached : - VIDAL (Pierre) . Les Heures de la femme à Paris. Tableaux parisiens. Paris : Éditions Boudet, Librairie Lahure, [1903]. - In-8, 233 x 177 : (2 blank ff.), VIII, 192 pp, (4 ff. last 3 blank), illustrated cover. Half lemon morocco with corners, gilt fillets, spine ribbed with cold flowers and mosaic of dark green and red leather, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (period binding). Beautiful edition of this work written and illustrated by Pierre Vidal, printed at 250 copies and decorated with 96 aquatint compositions and 150 floral friezes in colours. One of 220 copies on vellum from Papeteries du Marais. Stains on the boards.
