Pair of carved and gilded wood chairs with... - Lot 151 - Ader
Pair of carved and gilded wood chairs with flat back, the uprights in column with flutes and rudentures surmounted by acorns, the seat in horseshoe richly carved with rais-de-coeur and pearls resting on tapered legs with rudentures and foliage; on both of them a label of the 18th century inscribed in ink: "Salon de Monseigneur"; (chips and wear). Stamp of Georges Jacob, carpenter received master in 1765. Louis XVI period. H : 95 cm, W : 52 cm, D : 52 cm Provenance : Probably Charles Philippe de France, Count of Artois (1757-1836), brother of King Louis XVI and future King Charles X. Bibliographical reference : Sièges en société, cat. exp, Mobilier National, Paris, 2017, p. 171. The handwritten label "Salon de Monseigneur" on these chairs as well as on a number of other elements of this set allows historians to put forward the hypothesis that this furniture would have been made for the Count of Artois, brother of Louis XVI. Of this set, there are now five armchairs, four of which are kept at the Mobilier National and one of which belongs to a private collection (sale in Paris, Ader study, 29 January 2021, lot 133), five chairs belonging to the Mobilier National, six chairs sold at Sotheby's in Paris on 7 November 2013, lot 220 and a pair of chairs from the former Lucien Guiraud collection, sale at the Palais Galliera on 10 December 1971 (perhaps those presented here).
