Curious placard written by the Marshal of Villars forbidding the soldiers to do damage to the castle and land of Pailly. Zinc plate with text in open letters: "Louis Hector duc de Villars peer and marshal of France of the orders of the royal governor and lieutenant-governor of the provinces and countries of Metz and Verdun governor parter of the cities (...) Metz, commander in chief of the Armies of his Majesty in Flanders it is very expressly defended under penalty of punishment, to all, soldiers and of agesetc and others without exception to make damage, to take nor remove any furniture, livestock grains and fodder, without a ..... particular of us in the castle and land Pailly, as well as the mill and the tordoir which depends on it belonging to the sr Deponceaux to cut the montan trees, plants and fruit trees and pray mesrs the officers under the protection of the king. Biography : Claude Louis Hector, Duke of VILLARS (1653-1734) : He distinguished himself in the war of Holland, then fulfilled diplomatic missions in Bavaria and Austria . In the War of the Spanish Succession, he was victorious in Friedlingen (14 October 1702), which earned him the title of Marshal of France, then in Höchstädt (20 September 1703). His decisive victory over Prince Eugène in Denain (24 July 1712) hastened and facilitated the negotiations in Utrecht (1713) and Rastatt (1714). After the death of Louis XIV, he was a member of the Regency Council (1718) and Minister of State (1723). In 1733, Louis XV appointed him marshal general and gave him a command in Italy, where he died. (French Academy, 1714.)
