ALTIERI (Cardinal Paluzzo Paluzzi). Ristretto della visita fatta da Monsignori Corsi a diverse communità dello stato ecclesiastico. To'Eminissimo et illustrissimo signore Cardinale Altieri. In Italian, manuscript on paper. Italy, Rome, 1670. 100 ff. preceded and followed by two ff. of paper endpapers, cursive writing in brown ink, old quotation at the end of the volume: "II e 4", repeated twice . Binding (circa 1670 or shortly thereafter) in red morocco (Roman binding of the Andreoli brothers), right-hand gilt border, fan-shaped spandrels with "star" iron in the corners, large gilt compartmentalized decoration, gilt arms in the centre of the boards (cardinal coat of arms of the Altieri family), reminder of the coat of arms ("azure with six silver stars") in the decoration with repeated stars, six-ribbed spine decorated with diamond-shaped caissons and small gilt irons, roulette on the edges, gilt edges, combed marbled paper counterguards (upper spine fragile, corners a bit dull; small worm gallery on the endpapers, not serious, small tear on the first endpaper; note that the present binding has ochre-yellow coloured compartments: this colouring seems to have been done later and is not found in the other bindings from the Andreoli Brothers' workshop). Dimensions : 200 x 270 mm. Dedication manuscript relating the pastoral visits of Monsignor Corsi in 1670 reported to Cardinal Altieri. Superb binding with the arms of the cardinal-nephew of Pope Clement X (1590-1676), Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri Degli Albertoni (1623-1698). The latter was adopted in 1670 by Pope Clement X (Emilio Altieri), whose name he took. Binding attributable to the workshop of Brothers Gregorio and Giovanni Andreoli, bookbinders of the Chigi, active from circa 1651 to 1699, working in particular Pope Alexander VII Chigi and his nephew Cardinal Flavio II Chigi but also Pope Clement IX Rospigliosi and Pope Clement X (uncle of Paluzzi Paluzzo Altieri). The present binding is to be compared with those reproduced by Ruysschaert (1951), in particular plates I, IV and alia. Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri was legate in Avignon (1670-1677) and in Urbino (1673-1677), prefect of the "Congregation for the Propaganda Fide" from 1671. From 1671 to 1698 he was camerlengus of the Holy Church, in charge of the Church's finances, the Pope, already in his eighties, leaving temporal affairs to him. Cardinal Altieri participated in all the conclaves from 1667 (election of Clement IX) to 1691 (election of Innocent XII). Belonging to the ancient Roman nobility, the family bears the following coat of arms: "Azure with six silver stars". Bibliography: J. Ruysschaert.
