SENECUS. - Lot 137
SENECUS. L. annæi Senecæ philosophi cordubensis ad Lucilium Epistolarum Liber. Paris : Jacques Rezé, 1603. - In-8, 172 x 102 : (4 ff.), 824 pp. and (24 ff.). Havana morocco, gilt arms in the centre of the boards, bordered by gilt foliage and flowers, inscribed in a rectangular compartment decorated at the corners with gilt foliage, the whole included in a large frame composed of 4 gilt roulettes, featuring notably foliage and fleur-de-lys, smooth spine decorated in the same spirit, gilt edges (period binding). New Latin edition shared between Adrian Perrier, François Gueffier, Olivier de Varenne and Jacques Rezé, of Seneca's Letters to Lucilius, prefaced by the humanist Marc-Antoine Muret (1526-1585) and with notes and commentaries by the latter, Fernandi Piciani, Erasmus (1469-1536), Johannes Opsopaeus (1556-1596), Janus Gruter (1560-1627) and François Juret (1553-1626). Beautiful copy in a richly decorated binding, with the arms of the city of Bordeaux. It is probably a prize book. Headpiece, top of the spine and corners skilfully restored. First cover and spine partly discoloured, endpapers renewed. Title leaf restored, obviously due to the removal of a bookplate. Opposite the title has been brought back a blank sheet including a manuscript bookplate dated 1737. Stamp largely erased at the top of the title.
