About 1865 N° 54493 Manufactured around 1865, 34,000 pieces. History: This rifle may have been given by Garibaldi, the hero of the two worlds, or one of his sons, who also fought at Arnay-le-Duc, in remembrance of the violent fighting that took place there: "The affair of Arnay-le-Duc and Bligny-sur-Ouche, on December 3, 1870, was of greater importance. Garibaldi was assisted by General Cremer, who, at the head of 5,000 mobilized troops, came to operate in Bligny while Garibaldi was operating in Arnay. The enemy, no doubt seeking revenge for the failure of November 30, had entered the Ouche valley with more considerable forces, 10 to 11,000 men and 34 cannon. Garibaldi, who had been informed of the movement, consulted with General Crémer to catch the enemy in the crossfire. He drove them back from Arnay in the direction of Bligny, where General Crémer was waiting with his mobilized troops and 8 long-range guns. The defeat of the Prussians was complete; they had nearly 400 men hors de combat and left 280 prisoners. »
