This opus is dedicated to the financier and patron Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson (1702-1744), with a laudatory dedication engraved at the head of the collection: "Two things equally guided in the conduct of the work I present to you, Imagination to compose it; Judgement, to offer it to you; and I make it a marked honour to publish that I did not feel more driven by the desire to make the Beautiful, than by the flattering idea of being flattened by a Connoisseur such as yourself"... Provenance: collection of the violinist Henri Vieuxtemps.
