Maurice OHANA (1913-1992). Autograph music... - Lot 309 - Ader
Maurice OHANA (1913-1992). Autograph music manuscript signed, 24 Preludes for piano, 1972-1973; title and 41 leaves 37.5 x 28 cm. Great cycle for piano, partially premiered by Gérard Frémy at the Royan Festival on April 17, 1973, then in its entirety on November 20, 1973 at the Espace Cardin by Jean-Claude Pennetier, who made a reference recording (Arion 1974). [CCP74, p. 388-394] "The 24 Preludes are presented first of all as a tribute to Chopin, by the title, by the low D that ends both cycles, but above all by the general conception of the work which, from an apparently random succession of 24 short sequences, creates an organic whole obeying a hidden order, without any anecdotal reference. In this "work-sum" are also gathered the essential elements of nature which form the familiar theme of Maurice Ohana, "the polyrhythm of raindrops, the suspended and blurred sonorities of a morning fog, the long spread-out chords of a sleeping water, the chromatic race of the breaking winds" (Michel Bernard). It also brings together the essential sound possibilities of the instrument, amplified by the harmonic resources provided by the third pedal, as well as a few manual accessories that are used very occasionally. (Christine Prost). I Clear, bright; II Very fast, very tight; III Slow; IV Fairly fast; V Not too fast, even; VI Bright, bright; VII Fairly slow free; VIII A little hesitant and gradually freer; IX Fairly slow - free, "In a velvety, deep tone," with at the end, the indication: "In memory Fats Waller & Count Basie" and the drawing of a scorpion; x Tumultuous, percussive; XI Slow, cold; XII Quite slow (free); XIII; XIV Quiet, in a sonorous haze; XV (whipped, like a rasgueado); XVI Quiet, free; XVII Very lively. Articulated and elusive; XVIII Very slow (free) soft, intense; XIX Animated, free; XX; XXI; XXII Very lively, agitated; XXIII Very slow, dark; XXIV Quite slow The manuscript is carefully noted in Indian ink on tracing paper, the piano being noted on 1, 2, 3 or 4 staves; it is signed at the end of the monogram and dated "XI.72 III.73". The title page is calligraphied, signed and dated: "Maurice Ohana 1972-73". An introductory page indicates the first performances, gives the duration: "40 min. approx.", and "Notes for the performance".
