Maurice OHANA (1913-1992). Autograph music... - Lot 311 - Ader
Maurice OHANA (1913-1992). Autograph music manuscript signed, Sacral d'Ilx for harpsichord, oboe and horn, 1975; [2]-21 leaves 37 x 27.5 cm (the last one cut out and reassembled). Piece for oboe, horn and harpsichord, premiered at the Royan Festival on March 23, 1967 by oboist Jacques Vandeville, horn player Gilles Mahaud and harpsichordist Élisabeth Chojnacka. It is dedicated to the musicologist Harry Halbreich. [CCP77, p. 404-407] In the program for the premiere, Ohana wrote: "Carved in stone, fashioned in bronze or gold, buried or on the surface of the earth, a whole mythology of fabulous animals, characters, and undeciphered signs populates the soil of the Iberian Almeria, all the way to the outskirts of Elche, once called Ilx. A sound light emanates from these archetypes that come from the solar rites of spring, war and the world of the beasts that bring death and resurrection, from the gifts of the earth and the sea. It is transcribed here in the sensibility of the author who captures it, in a gradual also cut in full sound matter, where time and space merge to perpetuate the watch, begun before man, of things freed from all duration and all servitude, which protect him while ignoring him." The manuscript is carefully noted in India ink on 16-line tracing paper, with scratch corrections; it is signed at the end with the monogram and dated "4.XI.75." The title page is calligraphed with the monogram and the date 1975; a preliminary sheet gives the duration (16 minutes) and "Notes pour l'interprétation". Discography: Jacques Vandeville, Jens McManama, Élisabeth Chojnacka (Erato 1991).
