Maurice OHANA (1913-1992). Autograph music... - Lot 312 - Ader
Maurice OHANA (1913-1992). Autograph music manuscript signed, Lys de Madrigaux, 1975-1976; [4]-50 leaves (plus a 20 bis crossed out in blue pencil) 37 x 27.5 cm. Important work for women's voices and choir and small ensemble. "A masterpiece of Ohana's vocal production, Lys de Madrigaux brings together his love of medieval music and his admiration for Monteverdi" [CCP79, pp. 408-412]. Originally commissioned by Radio-France for the Maîtrise, the work was written for women's voices and premiered on June 1, 1976 at the Maison de la Radio, by the Radio-France Women's Choir, with France Pennetier (piano), Christian Villeneuve (organ), and Monique Rollin (zither), under the direction of Guy Reibel, who dedicated the work and recorded it (Erato 1983). The work is composed of a women's choir (24 voices), 3 sopranos and a mezzo soloist, percussion, piano and organ, and zither. Lasting about 22 minutes, the work is in six parts: I Calypso; II Circe; III Star made blues; IV Parques; V Tropique de la Vierge; VI Miroir de Sapho "These Madrigals are all little dramas whose plot is based on the musical development and not on a text, with the exception of one piece (blues) which can, moreover, be vocalized. The female figures evoked are fascinating and poisonous; their troubled or cruel power gives rise to a sensual and wild music whose centre is a nostalgic blues, sung in unison to an English text by the composer" (Christine Prost). The manuscript is carefully written in Indian ink on 16-line tracing paper; it is signed at the end and dated "3 III 76. The title is calligraphed with the composer's signature and the date "1975-76". Two introductory sheets give the diagrams of the "successive dispositions of the choir", the indication of the creation and the duration, the nomenclature of the voices and instruments, and "notes for the performance".
