Maurice OHANA (1913-1992). Autograph music... - Lot 321 - Ader
Maurice OHANA (1913-1992). Autograph music manuscript signed, Concerto for cello and orchestra "In dark and blue", 1989-1990; 63 sheets ca. 45 x 31 cm (margins slightly trimmed at the plate). Orchestral score of this Cello Concerto commissioned and premiered by Mstislav Rostropovich, accompanied by the cello-piano reduction. The premiere took place on May 13, 1991 at the Evian Festival by Mstislav Rostropovich (who is the dedicatee), the student orchestra of the Toho Gakuen Music School, conducted by Seiji Ozawa. Ohana was not satisfied with this poorly prepared audition. [CCP99, p. 490-492] The orchestra includes 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 3 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, 2 percussionists, harp, and strings. The episodes follow one another like " an immense lament, dreamy and peaceful, suddenly crossed by raging accents and revolting impulses " (E. Canat de Chizy and F. Porcile), marked in particular by jazz (p. 36, in the Slow movement, Ohana notes " Here's to you, Satchmo ! "). The manuscript, with the simple title Concerto at the top, is carefully noted in Indian ink on tracing paper with 34 lines, with traces of correction by scratching, and 4 bars crossed out (p. 52-53). It is signed at the end of the drawing with a radiating sun surrounded by the letters OANA, and dated "Carnac 6.VI.90". Attached is the autograph musical manuscript of the cello-piano reduction, bearing the Concerto (In Dark and Blue); 29 sheets 37 x 27 cm. It is carefully noted in Indian ink on tracing paper, with traces of correction by scratching, and 3 bars crossed out (p. 24); it is signed at the end of the drawing of a radiant sun surrounded by the letters OANA, and dated " 22 XI 89 Sanctae Cecilae gratias ". Discography : Sonia Wieder-Atherton, Orchestre philharmonique du Luxembourg, conductor Arturo Tamayo (Timpani 1997)
