Manuel ROSENTHAL (1904-2003). Autograph musical manuscript signed, Les Soirées du Petit Juas, May-June 1942; [2]-36 oblong pages 27 x 35.5 cm. Suite of eight pieces for string quartet, written while Rosenthal was a refugee in Marseille under the protection of the Countess Pastré. It is dedicated to Marcel Mihalovici and his friend the sculptor Irène Codreano (who hid Rosenthal in her Parisian studio). A long "Author's Note" on the back of the title page explains the title and allusions of each of the eight pieces. "1°) During the sad years 1941-42, frequent and affectionate meetings united the author and the dedicatees at the "Châlet des Enfants", Avenue du Petit Juas, in Cannes. Hence the title of the collection and that of the first piece [Le Châlet des Enfants]. 2°) [Kid Much' académicien] Kid Much is the nickname given to the nephew of the dedicatee, the young F....... F...... As a joke, an academic reception speech was once offered to him ironically by the main tenant of the Châlet des Enfants, after reading a paper peppered with tasty spelling mistakes. 3°) A nightingale. This is the memory of the passage at the Châlet des Enfants of the singer C...... V...... 4°) The hateful pronoun: this title easily speaks for itself... 5°) La Minoque. This is the name friendly given by her relatives to the pianist Monique H... [Haas]. 6°) André, or Father Christmas. One of the regular guests of the Châlet, André A..., [...] had the kind habit of arriving at his friends' homes with a bag on his back containing some nice country products. [...] 7°) Irene, queen of the mermaids. It was the sculptor Irene C....... whose charming qualities earned her this nickname. Her ethnic origins have incited the author to compose for this piece motives of Romanian folklore. 8°) Marcel the Pathetic. This is how the author often named his friend, the composer Marcel M......... after hearing a very beautiful sonata by him. This piece uses motifs more or less inspired by the said sonata, without however pastiche it, and only as a tribute to an admired composer and a precious friend. The manuscript, in black ink on 24-line paper, with generally 4 systems of 4 staves per page, is signed at the end and dated "La Madrague le 16 juin 1942"; it bears the stamps of the SACEM dated October 9, 1942. The 4 autograph parts of 1st violin (10 p.), 2nd violin (11 p.), viola (9 p .), cello (11 p.) are attached. Discography: Quatuor Danel (Calliope 1996).
