MOLIÈRE. Œuvres. Paris: Paulin, 1835. - 2 volumes in-8, 262 x 167 : frontispiece, 768 pp, (2 ff. last blank), printed cover ; 895 pp. printed cover. Half red long-grained morocco with corners, gilt fillets, old ornamented smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Champs-Stroobant Sr). A very fine edition of Molière's works, "rightly esteemed for its admirable illustration" (Carteret). (Carteret) which includes a portrait of Molière on the frontispiece and 800 vignettes in the text, woodcuts after compositions by Tony Johannot. The edition begins with a note on the life and works of Molière by Sainte-Beuve. A fine copy, complete with the covers dated 1836, bound by Jean Stroobants at the beginning of the 20th century, who brought back for decoration the spines of a period binding of another copy, decorated with beautiful rocaille irons. Some foxing to the portrait. Scattered foxing and a few browned leaves. Provenance: G. de Bayser, with bookplate.
