[ENLUMINATION]. [HERALD]. Gouache-enhanced leaf from Georg Rüxner, Anfang, ursprüg, und herkomen des Thurniers inn Teutscher nation... [Seimmern], [1532]. Print on paper, enhanced with gouache. Size: 306 x 200 mmRüxner's work offers a detailed description of the 36 tournaments held between the reign of Henry the Oisealer (in the 10th century) and 1487, with a preface on the origins of the tournaments . The participants in each tournament are listed, and the woodcuts describe not only the competitions and give elements of heraldry but also the prize-giving and associated feasts. This leaf corresponds to fol. [xxvi] of the 1532 edition. This edition is associated with Count John II of Palatinate-Simmern (1492-1557), Count Palatine of the Rhine of Simmern, who in 1530 set up a printing house in Simmern Castle. Hieronymus Rhodler worked there as a printer. One of the best-known prints from this printing house is the Tournament Book by Georg Rüxner.
