Returning to France in 1754, Dupleix maintained complex relations with the Company and ended up in misery: "I sacrificed my youth, my fortune, my life, to enrich my nation in Asia. Unfortunate friends and weak relatives devoted their goods to the success of my projects. They are now in misery and need. I have submitted to all judicial forms, I have asked against the last creditor what is due to me. My services are treated as fables, I am treated as the most vile being of the human race. I am in the most deplorable indigence. The small property that I had left has just been seized. I am forced to ask for a delay sentence to avoid being dragged to prison."(Memoire Pour Le Sieur Dupleix Contre La Compagnie Des Indes: Avec Les Pieces Justificatives, Leprieur, 1759) Manuscript divided into three chapters, the first relating to maritime cities, the second to non-maritime cities, the third to the Compagnie des Indes, completed by various summary statements (including a statement "of the number of m[archan]ds vessels that are in the ports of the Kingdom") .
