This dissertation is divided into 23 chapters dealing with the general administration of the colony, the social state, the economic situation, the troubles, the colonial assembly of Saint-Marc, the revolt of the mulattoes and slaves, the civil commissioners, etc. This manuscript is enriched with a pencil map of Saint-Domingue and 18 original drawings reproducing portraits and historical scenes from 18th century engravings. Among these drawings is a double-page reproduction of a large satirical engraving captioned "Discussion sur les hommes de couleur" (Discussion on the men of color), a print created after the May 1791 debates on the status of men of color in the French colonies, in which Julien Raimond, a citizen of color, is depicted tearing up the Declaration of Human Rights. Following the conclusion, Guétrot copied three texts of revolutionary laws on Saint-Domingue.
