[MILITARIA]. State of the military governments, both general and particular, and States Majors of the places of the Kingdom. In French, manuscript on paper. France, (Paris ?), 18th century (after 1773). [7] ff. (engraved title completed in ink, introduction, table of governments) + 117 ff. in beautiful brown and pale red ink. Bound in red morocco, triple gilt fillets on the boards, gilt flowers on the corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt designs, green morocco title page, inner lace and gilt edges, black chagrin case by Rivière & son of London. Dimensions of the manuscript : 165 x 112 mmCarefully drawn up manuscript , copied in red and black ink, with the title calligraphed in an engraved portico . For each place the work details the cities and the establishments, names the governors and superior officers and gives their emoluments. For Corsica, annexed five years earlier, the marquis de Monteynard is named governor and the count de Marbeuf lieutenant general. Provenance: Bookplate of Mortimer L. Schiff (1877-1931), American banker, philanthropist and bibliophile. On Schiff, collector: "In 1935, four years after Schiff's death, Seymour De Ricci produced an elaborate catalog of the signed bindings in the library... Three years after the publication of the catalog, the heirs disposed of the library in a disastrous auction in London. Schiff is remembered as a connoisseur who brought together an unrivalled collection of decorative bindings and illustrated books. (Dickinson, Dictionary of American Book Collectors, pp. 281-282).
