HIPPOCRATE. - Lot 76
HIPPOCRATE. The Works of Hippocrates Translated into French, with remarks. Et Conférées sur les Manuscripts de la Bibliothèque du Roy. Paris : the company of the booksellers, 1697. - 2 volumes in-12, 161 x 90 : (93 ff.), 451 pp. (2 ff. last blank) ; (2 ff.), 543 pp. Red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, spine decorated with nerfs, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges on marbling (period binding). First edition of the translation by André Dacier (1651-1722) of the works of Hippocrates. It is considered to be the best early French translation of the works of the famous ancient Greek physician, which was only really superseded by the one proposed by Littré in 1839. The edition begins with an important preface followed by a life of Hippocrates dedicated to "Monseigneur le chancelier" referring to Louis Boucherat (1616-1699), chancellor from 1685 to 1699. Each treatise is accompanied by often very interesting explanatory notes. A precious copy, bound in the workshop of Luc-Antoine Boyet or at least that of his gilder. One can recognize the palette IV and the roulette A as listed by Isabelle de Conihout and Pascal Ract-Madoux in the book Reliures française du XVIIe siècle, chefs-d'œuvre du Musée Condé (p. 110). A copy from the prestigious library of Édouard Rahir, very well preserved despite a small tear at one corner. Restorations to folio Bb2 in the second volume. Provenance: Édouard Rahir, with bookplate.
