Relation de l'Égypte par Abd-Alatif, médecin de Bagdad; suivie De divers Extraits d'Écrivains Orientaux, et d'un État des Provinces et des Villages de l'Égypte dans le XIVe siècle.
Paris : Treuttel and Würtz, 1810. - In-4, 267 x 203 : xxiv, 752 pp. (1 f.). Blond calf, gilt roulettes on the boards, smooth spine decorated with grotesque, gilt roulette inside, gilt edges (Bozérian jeune).
First French edition dedicated to Napoleon I, based on the English edition published by Joseph White in 1800, translated and enriched with historical and critical notes by the orientalist Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacy (1758-1838).
It is one of the most important works published by the latter. The relation he gives was composed in the thirteenth century by Muwaffaq al-Dīn Abd al-Latif al-Baġdādī (1162-1231), an Arab physician from Baghdad, one of the most famous practitioners of his time. It is divided into two parts. The first deals with the location and climate of Egypt, its plants, animals, ancient monuments, buildings, ships, and different kinds of food. The second deals with the Nile and its peculiarities as well as with the plague that raged in Egypt in 1201 and 1202, when the author was himself in Egypt.
Following this, Silvestre de Sacy added several pieces, namely the biography of Abd al-Latif al-Baġdādī taken from the History of the Physicians of Ebn-Abi-Osaiba, a life of Abu-Daoud Soleiman, an Arab physician of Spain, an extract from the Syriac Chronicle of Gregory Abu'lfaradj, two chapters of the historical Prolegomena D'Ebn-Khaldun, which concern the search for buried treasures and the monuments of the architecture of ancient peoples, extracts from the Relation of the embassy of Peter Patyr Milanois, a passage from the History of the Persian poets of Douletschah Gazi Samarcandi, concerning the destruction of the books of the Persians, and a piece on the use of masonry wells in hydraulic constructions, taken from the Tableau de l'Indoustan by M. Legoux de Flaix.
Followed by texts in Arabic, Syriac and Persian, as well as the State of the provinces and villages of Egypt, drawn up in the year 1376, under the reign of Sultan Mélic-Alaschraf Schaban, translated from Arabic by Silvestre de Sacy.
A very fine copy in a signed binding by Bozérian jeune.
