DELACROIX (Jacques Vincent). The Danger of the memories. Versailles : Blaizot ; Paris : Bossange, Masson et Besson, 1806. - 2 volumes in one in-8, 198 x 124 : viij, 298 pp. ; (2 ff.), 296 pp. Red morocco, gilt border and gilt arms in the center of the boards, smooth spine decorated, gilt border inside, gilt edges (period binding). Second edition published one year after the original which had been temporarily prohibited by the police, of this work, a kind of monarchic novel, composed by Jacques Vincent Delacroix (1743-1832), judge at the civil court of Versailles and professor of law. The author openly supports the new consul Bonaparte, as he will greet later the royal government of Louis XVIII: "This work is not a novel; and it had a quite other object than that to please the imagination, or to make feel some temporary emotion. It was intended to rekindle in the soul of all Frenchmen that feeling of love and veneration for their kings, which has always characterized the nation. It was not enough to have raised the Throne, which short-sightedness had brought down; to have placed there, by a general assent, a Hero already crowned so many times by the victory, and to whom the public recognition owed a new crown; it was necessary to invest him with this affection, this enthusiasm, this magic devotion, which make the force and the safeguard of the Monarchs. As much as one had calumniated and degraded this popular adoration, in which a generous Nation had been indulging for centuries, the Author has made as much effort to give it back its first splendor ". (pp. v-vj). A fine copy in red leatherette with the arms of Napoleon I. A very well preserved copy despite a small stain on the first cover. Some foxing.
