*DORÉ (Gustave)] - CHATEAUBRIAND (François-René de). - Lot 117
*DORÉ (Gustave)] - CHATEAUBRIAND (François-René de). Atala by the Vte de Chateaubriand. Paris : Librairie de L. Hachette et Cie, 1863. - In-folio, 418 x 304 : (2 ff.), XI, 77 pp., (1 f.), 30 plates. Red morocco, large gilt interlacing decoration and gilt and cold fillets framing the boards, spine with false nerves decorated, red morocco frame inside, decorated with gilt roulettes, green morocco lining decorated with gilt fillets and arabesques in the frame and gilt motif of curved interlacing and foliage in the center, green moiré silk endpapers, gilt edges on marbled boards (binding of the period) Leblanc, p. 71. Famous first edition illustrated with 44 woodcut compositions by Gustave Doré, including 7 chapter headings, 7 culs-de-lampe as well as 30 plates printed on a tinted background and under captioned serpente . "No text, perhaps, was more difficult to translate by pencil than that of Atala, whose splendidly moving pages everyone knows. Gustave Doré, with an incredible ease, shows himself there alternately dark, bright, graceful and virile. One could not render, with more savage but quiet poetry, these vast solitudes, these impenetrable forests where the light and the shades carry out so strange effects. The desert, especially, is rendered with a power that it would be difficult to equal. Those who reproach Doré with a certain monotony perhaps do not remember the nature of the poem and the invariable place of the scene" (Leblanc). A precious copy in a lined binding of the period, a very rare condition. The binding does not bear a signature but it is certainly a very luxurious publisher's binding. We have not found any other equivalent copy. A few small rubs from use, not serious. Rare foxing.
