DUPRÉ (Louis). Voyage à Athènes et à Constantinople, ou collection de portraits, de vues et de costumes grecs et ottomans. Paris : Imprimerie de Dondey-Dupré, 1825-[1838]. - In-folio, 576 x 415 : (3 ff.), 52 pp. 41 plates. Half burgundy morocco with corners, gilt fillets, smooth spine decorated (period binding). Blackmer 517. - Colas 916. - The Ottoman world : the Sefik E. Atabey collection, n° 381. First edition of what is " PROBABLY THE GREATEST WORK EVER DONE ON GREECE AND TURKEY " . (Blackmer). Dedicated to Count Clement de Ris, this work is the account of the journey that the painter and lithographer Louis Dupré (1789-1837), a student of David, undertook in the Levant in 1819 and 1820. During this trip he made many drawings which were successfully exhibited at the Royal Museum exhibition in 1824. It is these drawings that he proposed to reproduce by lithography in this fabulous work. The author specifies on page 2: "If I allowed myself to join a short account of my journey, it is certainly not to repeat, on places so often visited and described, what has been repeated a thousand times before me, but only to give explanations that I believe indispensable, and to make, if I can express myself thus, the history of my drawings. The work was published in 10 issues from 1825 to 1838. It includes 12 lithographs in black in the text, 40 lithographed and hand-colored plates, as well as a large lithographed folding plate reproducing a Turkish passport. These lithographs, with vivid colors, represent views but also costumes and portraits of a great realism. This copy, on wove paper, comes from the rich collection of Henri Huchet, Count de La Bédoyère (1782-1861), a career military man but also an erudite bibliophile who owned one of the most important book collections of the 19th century. Rubbing from use, hinge of the first board fragile and split over a few centimeters, dull corners, lacks on the edges of the boards. Occasionally heavy foxing. Large tear to the folding plate but not missing. Provenance: Henri Huchet, Count of La Bédoyère, with bookplate (cat. 1862, n° 2033).
