*CLAVÉ (Antoni) - RABELAIS (François). - Lot 225
*CLAVÉ (Antoni) - RABELAIS (François). Gargantua. Marseille : Les Bibliophiles de Provence, 1955. - In-4, 380 x 283 : ccl pp, (7 ff. last 2 blank), printed cover. In sheets, filled cover, folder and case of the publisher. One of the most successful modern illustrated editions of Rabelais' Gargantua, decorated with more than 110 color compositions by Spanish painter and engraver Antoni CLAVÉ (1913-2005). Among these illustrations are more than 50 woodcut lettering by Blaise Monod and more than 60 original lithographs drawn and executed by the artist, including 15 full-page and 2 double-page. There are also some ornaments and typographical signs printed after drawings by Clavé. The edition was limited to 220 copies on large Arches vellum, this one being one of the 200 numbered in Roman numerals, specially printed for Mr. Henry Reynaud. It has been enriched with a menu of 2 leaves in-4 illustrated on double page with an original lithograph by Clavé, signed in pen by the artist, and 2 ORIGINAL GOUACHES of two of the text's initials, those of chapters 36 and 43, accompanied by a trial print in colors under matting. A very well preserved copy despite some rubbing on the edges of the slipcase.
