Edition at 235 copies on vellum of the Marais, of the poems of Paul Valéry, divided into 3 parts: Album de vers anciens, La Jeune Parque and Charmes.
A PRECIOUS AND UNIQUE COPY, ENTIRELY ILLUSTRATED WITH 273 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS BY THE ILLUSTRATOR WILLIAM FEL (..-1957).
This artist was very famous for his illustrations of poetic or gallant works. We owe him compositions for editions of Félicia ou mes fredaines, the complete Poésies of Verlaine, the Œuvres d'Albert Samain, the Douze sonnets of Charles Guérin, etc.
The copy has been divided into 3 volumes, each corresponding to a part of the work. The first volume, devoted to the Album de vers anciens, includes a beautiful color frontispiece drawing in a watercolor and gilt frame, a calligraphic title dated 1932 in the same frame, 20 chapter headings and 19 lead pencil endpapers, as well as 4 out-of-text drawings, 2 of which are in lead pencil, one in watercolor and one in lead pencil with pencil highlights. In addition, there are 78 pencil drawings used as studies for the illustration.
The second volume, devoted to La Jeune Parque, has been enriched with 34 pencil drawings outside the text.
The last volume, including the collection Charmes, was enriched with 40 original drawings in graphite, including 20 chapter headings, 17 culs-de-lampe and 2 hors-texts. It also includes 76 other drawings used as studies for the illustration.
Superb copies in bindings by Charles Lanoë. The volumes of Album de vers anciens and Charmes are in full morocco with mosaics, while the volume of La Jeune Parque is in a more modest binding in marbled ivory parchment.
Copies very well preserved despite the spine of the green case and a repair to that of the parchment binding. A few rare foxing marks, not serious.
