Large porcelain dish of the pink family with... - Lot 32 - Ader
Large porcelain dish of the pink family with "Pompadour" decoration, China, Compagnie des Indes, 18th centuryPolychrome enamelled with a dominant blue color, the center decorated with peonies and chrysanthemums in a central medallion and the border decorated with peonies, lotus and four alternating cartouches, with the arms of an eagle and a fish On the reverse side, three flowering branches in iron red. Diameter : 47 cmLarge central crack. Since the 19th century, the order of this service has been historically attributed to the famous mistress of King Louis XV, the Marquise de Pompadour. The association of an eagle and a fish in a cartouche could symbolize respectively King Louis XV and the Marquise de Pompadour whose surname was Poisson. This hypothesis was questioned by Michel Beurdeley, a great specialist in Chinese porcelain, considering that the Marquise de Pompadour would certainly not have ordered a service whose decorative elements could recall her plebeian origins. This service also exists in two other versions, in blue underglaze and in polychromy with a dominant red color.
