Pair of xiangtuiping shaped vases with high flared necks of polychrome enameled porcelain in the Green Family style, China, 19th centuryThe central decoration shows the emperor Sui Yangdi - 隋煬帝ou Yáng Guǎng - 楊廣 (569-618) seated and drinking surrounded by officials, courtesans, and servants in a richly decorated dragon vessel mounted on wheels and pulled by numerous women in a landscape of wooded mountains, rocks, and lingzhi mushrooms. The procession shows halberdiers, horsemen and foot soldiers carrying banners and canopies; hidden behind rocks, two banners with inscriptions and a tent. The shoulder is decorated with a floral frieze and four cartouches decorated with sacred objects. The neck is decorated with children, two horsemen, a book and basket bearer and an official visiting a figure sitting on a rock surrounded by a crane and a servant near a vase in a landscape of plants, flowers, trees, lingzhi mushrooms and rocks. In the background, pavilions and mountains among the clouds. Two friezes, one floral, the other geometric, decorate respectively the bottom and the top of the vases. Height : 64 cm (23.5 in) . Sui Yang is the son of the first emperor of the Sui dynasty, Wendi, who was a great unifier and restorer of the Empire's infrastructure. Sui Yangdi ardently continued his father's work with the reconstruction of the Great Wall and the construction of the Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou to connect North and South China. The scene depicts Emperor Sui Yangdi going to the inauguration of this Grand Canal in 607 AD in his famous dragon boat on wheels, a real mobile palace pulled by hundreds of women, whose construction was entrusted to Yu Wen Kai and named Guan Feng Xing Dian - "Palace of the Vigilant Wind" - 觀風行殿. This setting illustrates the excess of domination and power of an extravagant emperor whose reign ends in a revolution.
