Porcelain vase with relief decoration of an eagle and monkeys perched on a tree, Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Polychrome enamelled porcelain baluster vase, the black background body is decorated in high relief with a scene representing three monkeys in a pine tree, one of which faces a threatening eagle. Around the tree are pink and green enamelled peonies. At the neck and base, a frieze enamelled in the imari style in red, green, manganese and gold enamels with stylized flowers and butterflies. Under the foot a mark in red on glaze : Dai Nihon Hichozan Shinpo sei - 大日本肥蝶山 信甫造. Height: 48 cmWith its lacquered wooden base. Hichozan was a secondary kiln in the Arita region. This trademark was used by Tashiro Monzaemon (?-1900) during part of the Meiji period between 1860 and 1880.
