BARBIER (Auguste). - Lot 17
BARBIER (Auguste). Iambes. Paris : Urbain Canel, Ad. Guyot, 1832. - In-8, dark blue half-maroquin with corners, gilt filets, smooth spine decorated, gilt head, cover and spine preserved (Noulhac). First edition of Barbier's first collection of poems. This is the major work of this author whom Barbey d'Aurevilly compared to Corneille and whom Baudelaire described as "a natural poet and a great poet". This collection consists of poems inspired by the July Revolution of 1830 and published from August of that year in "La Revue de Paris" and other newspapers such as "La Revue Britannique". Barbier gathered them in this collection under the title "Iambes", borrowed from André Chénier. Indignant at seeing the Three Glorious Years snatched away by Louis-Philippe, Barbier positioned himself as a republican protester and took issue with the proponents of Bonapartist opinion. At the age of 25, he wanted to be the spokesman of youth and revealed himself to be direct and vehement, with a sober but forceful language. The collection begins with a Preface by the editors that Carteret attributes to Philarète Chasles and that others think is by Barbier himself. This preface as well as the poems "La Tentation" and "Iambe IX" have not been reprinted. A very nice copy bound by Noulhac, complete with boards and back cover. Cover lined and slightly soiled. Stamp largely erased on the cover and title.
