Théophile-Alexandre STEINLEN. L.A.S. "Alex", Paris August 27 - Lot 37
Théophile-Alexandre STEINLEN. L.A.S. "Alex", Paris August 27, 1914, to his sister Henriette in Switzerland; 4 pages in-4. Beginning of the war. He announces the happy arrival of his daughter and son-in-law, Colette and Désiré Inghelbrecht, from Lausanne. He is very concerned about the situation at the beginning of the war: "The Jahoveh of the Battles, old Mars or the Good God [...] have spoken and in their indulgence (infinite as everyone knows) have decided that the peoples will massacre each other. So the people slaughter each other. Communications became difficult and Inghel found himself in a delicate situation abroad. "Free Helvetia, encircled as it is almost everywhere by countries at war, must necessarily see its business suffer"; but it should get through the storm without too much damage. He hopes that France, which ensures the supply of wheat to Switzerland, "will be strong enough to escape the crushing that the Teutons are attempting." One cannot foresee the end of "this dreadful war. For my part, an investment of Paris does not seem impossible - the Germans are playing a game of chance on this side of Europe - it will be enough for us to hold out long enough for what is being prepared for them on the eastern side to force them to turn around. [...] Life, lives don't count anymore -- you can't take care of your tiny self when the existence of the nation is at stake. [...] We hope that we will meet again in a Valmont around which no more storms will roar - The present upheavals prepare us for a hundred years of peace, predict optimistic auguries - let us accept these omens - to try to see them come true "...
