Marguerite YOURCENAR (1903-1987). L.A.S., December 18, 1965, - Lot 302
Marguerite YOURCENAR (1903-1987). L.A.S., December 18, 1965, to the painters Élie Grekoff and Pierre Monteret; 1 1/2 pages in-4, on an illustrated greeting card (a snowy farm); envelope. She thanks them for sending her the bookplates, and would like to have the engraving itself returned to her; for the time being she has only pasted them into two books, one of which is a Greek Anthology. She looks back on the past year, which has not been very good: "Until the end of June, I lived in the exhilaration (that you know) that comes from a great work in which one is immersed (L'Œuvre au Noir). Then, just when one would like to breathe, the work done, I had to engage in an exhausting editorial dispute," in which she is still immersed. She sadly recounts the death of her black spaniel, victim of a brain tumor: "It seems to me that he suffered and saw his strength diminish like one of us. [We would have liked so much to take him to Saumur to get to know your animals and your trees". The Boutardières estate will be a stopover on his next trip to France. "But when? As long as I am in litigation, I would rather not go through Paris, and let the lawyers take care of themselves"... An old photocopy of his letter of November 19, 1979, announcing the death of his companion Grace Frick, with an autographed envelope, is attached.
