Half-dome shaped incense burner, Eastern Iran, 10th-12th - Lot 225
Half-dome shaped incense burner, Eastern Iran, 10th-12th centuryBronze, in the form of a half-dome with a tri-lobed cut-out surmounted by a bird flanked by two bird heads in profile, resting on three feet. Partially openwork and engraved with floral motifs contained in cartouches or medallions. Height : 22,5 cm (Corrosion and restorations) Label of collection. This form of incense burner is representative of the metal production of the Eastern Iranian region (Khorasan) before the arrival of the Mongols. It may present some formal variants in the number of legs supporting the ember cassolette, the cutting of the arcature or the motif crowning it. For example, our object is very close to a work in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (M.78-1957), which has four legs, and to a work in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (53.219), which has a different arcature.
