[BIBLE] - FRIZON (Pierre). La Saincte bible françoise, Selon la vulgaire Latine reveuë par le commandement du Pape Sixte V. And printed by the authority of Clement VIII. With summaries on each book of the new testament extracted from the annals of Cardinal Baronius. Paris : Jean Richer, Pierre Chevalier, 1621. - 4 parts in two volumes in-folio, brown calfskin, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (late 18th century binding). Delaveau-Hillard, " Bibles imprimées du XVe au XVIIIe siècle conservées à Paris ", n° 463. First edition, dedicated to King Louis XIII, of this revision of the Louvain Bible by Pierre Frizon, canon of the church of Reims . It is sought after because it is the first to be illustrated with intaglio engravings, including a title-frontispiece drawn and engraved by Michel Lasne, 71 figures and portraits in the text by, among others, Melchior Tavernier, Michel von Lochom, Claude Mellan and Léonard Gaultier, and a map divided into 2 parts, also engraved in the text. The latter is printed here upside down. At the end is a section entitled "Means for discerning the Catholic French Bibles from the Huguenots. Et l'explication des passages de l'escriture selon le sens des Peres qui ont vescu avant & durant les quatre premiers Concils Oecumenicques", composed by Pierre Frizon and introduced by a special title, here addressed to Jean Richer alone, decorated with an engraved vignette. Bindings damaged, headbands faded, hinges cracked, corners dulled, rubbing from use. Endpapers and flaps of the calf of the second volume detached. Mottling, a few small wormholes.
