DALY (César). Private architecture in the 19th century under Napoleon III. Nouvelles maisons de Paris et des environs. Paris : A. Morel et Cie, 1864 ; Paris : Ducher et Cie, 1872. - 6 volumes in-folio, half black basane, spine ribbed and decorated (period binding). Complete first edition of this beautiful work on the exterior and interior private architecture in Paris and its surroundings, composed with the aim of making known the dwellings built since the beginning of the reign of Napoleon III, "that is to say, since a fortunately inspired administration has undertaken, by immense works, to establish between the great Parisian city and the needs of its inhabitants a harmony which was missing, and which was claimed imperiously at the same time by the industry and the trade, by the Art and the public amenity, by the hygiene and the general safety" (p. 9 of volume 1). Divided into two series: the first, published in 1864 and dedicated to Baron Haussmann, concerns private hotels (volume 1), rented houses (volume 2) and suburban villas (volume 3); the second, published in 1872, deals with the exterior and interior decorations of commercial establishments and dwellings with their various outbuildings in the city and countryside. The edition presents an abundant illustration composed of 3 title-frontispices and 227 plates including 9 on double page in the first series, and 221 plates in the second, including 11 on double page and 6 in colors. Rubbing of use to the spines, corners dulled. Some foxing and spotting, more important in the volumes of the second series, notably in volume 5.
