Pierre GASSENDI (1592-1655) mathematician,... - Lot 317 - Ader
Pierre GASSENDI (1592-1655) mathematician, astronomer and philosopher. L.A.S., Digne, September 8, 1626; 1 page in-fol. Beautiful and rare scientific letter. He introduces Mr. Besson "who was kind enough to take care of these notebooks that I had brought from Aix & that I send you back after having had them collated & signed by two notaries", one of whom is his clerk, the other his prosecutor; he begs his correspondent to "gratify them with some small employment on the occasion of the affairs of the impotent communities". He also evokes the affair of the sexton Robert. "I hope to go and see, & observe Mercury tomorrow morning. For today I have dispensed with it, because of an exhortation that I have just made to the Religious of St. Mary, for which preparation I had to use the whole morning. Yesterday I made an observation that I don't have to tell you about. It is that I had a mare opened up which had died to the father of the aforementioned S. Besson & found that she had very well kidneys, ureters & a bladder. I don't know what will happen to me if I have some horse opened, but I am beginning to doubt very much that it will be the same, & that the good monsr. d'Esparun has not imposed on me after having himself been carried away more by the relation of others than by his own experience. I am very anxious for the subject to come up, but as the occasion is more frequent in Aix, you could, if it is not inconvenient for you, obtain some clarification, but it would be necessary for some surgeon or person who has knowledge of these parts to be present.
