*PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947 )France Champagne.... - Lot 1 - Ader
*PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947 )France Champagne. Poster. 1891. Lithograph. 570 x 765 [600 x 805]. Bouvet 1. color print. A good proof, formerly dubbed on strong vellum. Scattered foxing. Fine cracks perceptible in the subject, notably in the letter at the head. Long tear of 9 cm at the left edge, formerly consolidated (but now fractured again). Small adhesive residue at the head on the reverse. "Bonnard was twenty-two when he made this publicity poster for a brand of champagne. It was his first important commission, for which he received 100 francs, a considerable sum that persuaded his skeptical parents that one could actually earn a living as an artist. The design was a sensational success. In May 1891 he wrote proudly to his mother that 'everyone' wanted to have his poster. Paris was used to Jules Chéret's posters of elegant ladies, and for Bonnard, too, they had served as an example, but the young artist went a great deal further in the stylization and abstraction of the image. He combined the naughty elegance of Chéret's depictions with a playful, almost caricatural figure and the black contours and arabesques of Japanese prints. Shortly before Bonnard designed this poster, he had gone to the Paris World Fair and visited the Volpini exhibition, where he had seen Gauguin's Volpini Suite, printed on yellow paper. His admiration of that series of prints is clearly reflected in this poster, which is conceived almost wholly in yellow and graphic black."
