Pieter Brueghel the Elder (ca. 1525-ca. 1569)... - Lot 4 - Ader
Pieter Brueghel the Elder (ca. 1525-ca. 1569) (after )Euntes in Emaüs (The Road to Emmaus). (Pl. of a suite of 12 landscapes). Circa 1555. Etching and burin by Jan and Lucas van Doetecum. 428 x 326 [ 450 x 352]. Hollstein 11; Orenstein 23; New Hollstein (Bruegel) 56. Beautiful and brilliant proof on thin watermarked laid paper (watermark not identified), addressed to Cock. Early inscription in pen and ink in the lower margin: "Pellerins d'Emaüs". Small sepia ink stain to the left of the word "Euntes". Numerous fold marks, especially visible on the verso. A long oblique print crease across the island at lower left. A 30mm vertical tear at the head, formerly restored on the reverse. A small hole in the foliage, filled in on verso. Two small chips to the right edge, tiny holes and moisture halos in the margins. Old gummed paper strip at the head of the verso, with small epidermis. Reproduced in J. van der Stock, ed, Hieronymus Cock; La gravure à la Renaissance (exhibition at the Royal Library of Belgium, Brussels, and the Fondation Custodia, Collection Frits Lugt), Paris, Brussels, Fonds Mercator ed, 2013, p. 387, no. 107.9. The preparatory drawing is in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp. Cock himself seems to be responsible for adding the halo to the figure of Christ and the setting sun on the horizon, giving the scene a biblical connotation. The margins of our print are larger than those of the print in the National Library, and similar to those of the print in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
