Rare and interesting voodoo sculpture with... - Lot 89 - Ader
Rare and interesting voodoo sculpture with four poles composed of a set of four statuettes crossed by a horizontal axis and two statuettes at the ends protected by iron umbrellas, materials implying the god Gou, deity of war, forge and iron. The important and thick sacrificial patina testifies to its probable effectiveness and to a long use of this composite sculpture, through numerous attachments and important libations, for which it is difficult to know if its destination was protection or attack. Fon, Benin Wood, iron, cords, cowrie shells, and other materials, very beautiful and important patina of use. H. 24 cm Provenance : Collection Anne and Jacques Kerchache Exhibition and Publication : VAUDOU exhibition at La Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain, Paris 2011, not reproduced in the catalog (visible on the Fondation Cartier website)
