An ancient and very beautiful "historical"... - Lot 118 - Ader
An ancient and very beautiful "historical" Gu mask. With an elegant pair of curved horns falling forward like two braids, separated at the top of the skull by a median ridge carved in relief and notched, the Gu hairstyle determined the precise rank of the woman embodied in the mask. Her face, with its bulging forehead characteristic of Gouro art, is adorned with scarification marks, and her slightly smiling mouth reveals her fine filed teeth, a tradition that is more aesthetic than ritual among the Gouro and that disappeared in the 1920s. This mask, which undoubtedly dates from the second half of the 19th century, and is the work of a master sculptor with a clearly identifiable style, reappears here in the 21st century almost a century after it was photographed in 1929 by Paul Guillaume himself, and published with Thomas Munro in the historical work: La Sculpture Nègre Primitive. It is no longer necessary to recall today the importance of the influence of the dealer Paul Guillaume for both Modern Art and African Art, and whose essential collection is visible and preserved at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. Gouro, Ivory Coast. Wood, polychromy, perfect state of conservation, wax stamp "PG" (Paul Guillaume) in the inner part of the mask in the upper right, and an old collection label "153", superb patina of use. H. 24 cm Provenance : - Former Albert Sarraut collection - Former Paul Guillaume collection - Former Marcel Évrard collection Publication: La Sculpture Nègre Primitive by Paul Guillaume and Thomas Munro, 1927 by Editions G.Grès et Cie. 1927, 43 photographs by Paul Guillaume in the first original edition in French.
