Rare and beautiful mask belonging to the... - Lot 123 - Ader
Rare and beautiful mask belonging to the same corpus as the four preceding masks but of a different construction. Its eyes (one is missing) are made of mother-of-pearl with bluish reflections reminiscent of the eyes of the cassowary, and applied and glued by sap, otherwise the nose is built in the same way as the others of the corpus in a folded vegetable fiber, but on a type of bone here quite different as it is the bone of the cassowary's plastron, its tiara of feathers (of cassowary) is complete and very well preserved. Its wild presence and the strength that emanates from this mask could only evoke the strength and the danger of the cassowary. Adjora or Aion people, Porapora River region, East Sepik province, Papua New Guinea Cassowary bone, mother-of-pearl, resin, vegetable fibers and cassowary feathers, old dry patina. H. 35 cm approximately with feathers Provenance : - Collected by Pierre Langlois and Marcel Évrard in 1959-60 - Former collection of Marcel Évrard
