A lot of two old polychrome masks, still... - Lot 124 - Ader
A lot of two old polychrome masks, still very expressive in their state, and characteristic of the swampy regions between the mouths of the Sepik and Ramu rivers, modeled in clay on a base of animal bone, probably a cassowary; one still bears its bone nasal ornament partly preserved and the nose decorated with a line of nassa shells, and the other its eyes still applied, and its cassowary feather ring still richly furnished. Little is known about the use of masks of this type and from this region, although their traditional character seems well established. We can note the existence of two other masks of this type in the collections formerly of the Museum of Primitive Art and now at the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the other collected by J. Guiart in the former collections of MNAO and currently at the Musée du Quai Branly Jacques Chirac, also another in the former collection John Friede No. 110 page 134 Vol. 1 of New Guinea Art Master Pieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005 at the 5 Continents Porapora River region, Papua New Guinea Bone, clay, nassa shells, pig tusk, vegetable fibers, wood and cassowary feathers, wear, age-related accidents and visible missing parts.
