Old polychrome dance ornament for a headdress.... - Lot 136 - Ader
Old polychrome dance ornament for a headdress. Complete with its fork made of cassowary bone intended to be stuck in the dancer's hair, this type of dance ornament would have swayed back and forth to the rhythm of the dance, representing a stylized double-faced face with openwork eyes and forehead. A few feathers remain in the holes made for this purpose, notably along a gutter carved on the top of the edge. Probably Sawos or Iatmul, Middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea Light alstonia (duduye) wood, vegetable stem, feathers, pigments and cassowary bone, very beautiful and old patina. H. 65 cm approximately with feathers and fork Provenance: - Collected by Pierre Langlois and Marcel Évrard in 1959-60 - Former collection of Marcel Évrard.
