Francesco ALBANI (Bologna 1578 - 1660) God... - Lot 8 - Ader
Francesco ALBANI (Bologna 1578 - 1660) God the Father appearing to Saint Thecla and Saint Agnes Copper 52.5 x 40.5 cm This composition is a delicate support and the reduced dimensions of a personal devotional painting, the same as a large canvas executed in 1647 for the high altar of the cathedral of Osimo in the Marche. Both Agnes and Thecla are virgin martyrs of the early Christian era, and as such are about to receive palms and crowns from the cherubs fluttering in the upper register. Each is represented with her attributes, Agnes with a lamb and Thecla near the cave where she lived part of her life. In 1595 Francesco Albani joined the famous Carracci brothers' academy in Bologna, which trained some of the greatest painters active in Rome and the Peninsula in the first part of the 17th century, such as the Dominiquin and Guido Reni. Adopting the measured classicism of his masters, who were both sensitive to the purity of Raphael and the warmth of Venetian coloring, Albania developed a personal and poetic practice of landscape painting with figures, which was to become one of his specialties. We thank Dr. Catherine R. Puglisi for having kindly confirmed the authenticity of this painting from a photograph.
