Nicolas-Antoine TAUNAY (Paris 1755-1830) The Return of Tobie Canvas 32,5 x 41 cm On the back of the stretcher a label with an inscription in ink "Taunay painter of historical landscape /...in Paris, died in 1830. Pupil of Casanova" Nicolas-Antoine Taunay painted on the motif with his friends Jean-Joseph Bidauld, Lazare Bruandet or Jean-François Swebach-Desfontaines in the forests of Fontainebleau and Saint-Germain. In 1784, he was admitted to the Academy but never became a member. However, he obtained a pension at the French Academy in Rome where he spent three decisive years: he trained in neo-classicism in the wake of David, painting landscapes and historical subjects, and was a student of Casanova. The composition of this Return of Tobias was known from the large version (176 x 242 cm; cf. Claudine LEBRUN-JOUVE: Nicolas-Antoine Taunay (1755-1830), Paris, 2003; Cat. P.224 p. 156, repr.) that Taunay exhibited at the Royal Academy of France in Rome in 1786 (n° 36), then at the Salon of 1787 (n° 212) and at the Salon of 1791 (n° 216). Claudine LEBRUN-JOUVE: Nicolas-Antoine Taunay (1755-1830), Paris, 2003; Cat. P.224 p.156, repr. The Book of Tobit, written around 200 B.C., is included in the Old Testament. Tobias is sent by his father to retrieve the sum of money that his father had lent to one of his relatives. On the way, he meets the archangel Raphael who accompanies and protects him. Here we see him welcomed by his mother who runs to meet him as he returns with Raphael.
