Jacques LACAN (1901-1981) psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Au - Lot 236
Jacques LACAN (1901-1981) psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Autograph manuscript, [1967?]; 7 pages in-4 with numerous erasures and corrections. Presentation of a study project on poetry and psychiatry. The text is abundantly corrected, with several successive redactions of the same passage. He is asked to speak to an English audience on the subject of "Poetry and Psychiatry. The task of summarizing the variations of this theme over the last century would be too great. So I will only enter into it with the idea of questioning its presuppositions. To indicate in what way I renew them would be, after such a work, what the reader would have the right to expect, when too often, so much is done, in the all-round of scholars, only to dispense with this only real contribution. That is why I will stick to this one, which is appropriate to the limits imposed on a simple article. I will even keep below what I have done in this sense. A text of mine on the purloined letter (of Poe), which I chose to open the collection of my Writings, indicates well the access that I open to any criticism which rebels to fill the office of selling the psychological junk. But a revival of Hamlet (which has become the bridge to the bones of psychoanalysts), a study of Claudel's great trilogy (that of the Hostage) remain the privilege of the audience to whom I have dedicated my word for twenty years: that of Freud's school and of my Parisian seminar"... Etc. A sheet of autograph notes bearing the date 21.IX.67 is attached.
