POPE. Bernardo Paganelli di Montemagno, Eugene iii (1080?-11 - Lot 298
POPE. Bernardo Paganelli di Montemagno, Eugene iii (1080?-1153) Pope in 1145, disciple of Bernard Clairvaux, he created the Sacred College, and launched the second crusade. Original bull bearing the rota, signature and subscription of the pope and his monogram, with the signatures of six cardinals or prelates, Altissiodorum (Auxerre) 7th of the calendas of October (September 26) 1147, 3rd year of his pontificate; large folio parchment (55.5 x 42 cm), the first line in large letters (folds, light browning and soiling); seal missing; in Latin. Extremely rare papal document from 1147 concerning the Cistercian abbey of Barzelle in Indre. The pope, in the third year of his pontificate, addresses the abbot Foucher de Barzelle ("Fulcherio abbati de Barzella"). He placed the monastery under his protection, and confirmed the abbey's possessions, extending from the woods and land of Barzelle to the river Nahon, including the land and woods of Osmond, the land and woods of Congi, the land and woods of Jaunay, the barn of Fontgiraud, land and meadows in Valençay ("Valentiaco"), etc. He also confirmed the rights granted to the abbey by the monastery. He also confirmed the rights granted to the abbey. The bull presents the rota bearing the name of the pontiff and his motto (Fac mecum domine signum inbonum), with the cross probably autograph, the signature Ego Eugenius catholice ecclie eps probably drawn by the chancellery, the subscription SS (Subscripsi) probably autograph, and the large monogram of the Benevalete. The bull was also signed by six cardinals and prelates, with their cross, name and subscription: two cardinal-priests, two cardinal-deacons, and two bishops: Alberic of Beauvais, bishop of Ostia, and Imarus bishop of Tusculum (Frascati). At the bottom of the bull, authentication of the chancellery. The Cistercian abbey of Barzelle, on the territory of the commune of Poulaines (Indre), was founded in 1137; poor, it could not build its church until late, dedicated to Our Lady in 1219; it housed a dozen monks; it was dismantled during the Revolution. "I have not been able to find any titles of this abbey, nor anything that concerns it" (La Thaumassière, Histoire de Berry, p. 802). In the collection concerning the abbey in the Departmental Archives of the Indre, we find a late copy on paper of this document (H5).
