Important silver, vermeil and champlevé enamel desk pad or wallet. Saint Petersburg, 1882. In the center the enamelled figure of Alexander III and Maria Feodorovna under imperial crown underlined by a laurel branch tied with an oak branch with below, the arms of the city of St. Petersburg: these appliques are brocaded on a double frame with crossed rods, fixed on a blue velvet background. On either side of the large crown surmounting the figure, in the corners of the inner frame, two imperial crowns symbolizing the double coronation of the Emperor and Empress. The interior is in white moire. The fourth plate is covered with the same blue velvet as the bottom of the first plate and the back. It is undoubtedly a gift for the coronation which was celebrated on May 15, 1883 in Moscow. Hallmarks: 84, St. Petersburg, 1882, assayer "И-Е" (Ivan Vonifatievich Evsigueneev) and silversmith "САЗИКОВЪ" (Firm of Pavel Sazikov) with the eagle of supplier to the Court. 46 x 32.5 cm; gross weight: 4500 g The coronation did take place on May 15, 1883 and this portfolio dates from 1882: this event was of course prepared in advance and all the great goldsmiths (Ovchinnikov, Sazikov, Khlebnikov...) were overloaded with orders from various constituted bodies: all the provincial and district assemblies of nobility, all the merchant guilds, all the trades, all the major municipalities, the officers of the regiments, the high officials... All had to present gifts to the imperial couple. In order to be able to fulfill this influx of orders, they had to be made in advance. The official date of the coronation does not appear on this blotter, it was only fixed in January 1883. The figure of the imperial couple is not the most common, but it appears on a presentation dish of bread and salt offered by the council (douma) of the city of St. Petersburg, on the occasion of this coronation, work of Sazikov.
