Hunting dagger with iron handle. Central Europe, 18th centur - Lot 256
Hunting dagger with iron handle. Central Europe, 18th century. The iron handle with nails and ovoid incisions is of the karabela type, popular in Poland. The blade is probably a shortened rapier blade, as evidenced by the long ricasso and the gutter that runs to the tip. The reuse of broken rapier blades is very common for shorter weapons. Markings: on each side of the blade on the ricasso in two lines "WILLEM / MEIGEN" accompanied by a six-pointed star in a circle and a crown (?). Length : 54,5 cm A sword of justice dated 17th century with a blade of Willem Meigen is kept in the municipal museum of Zutphen (Netherlands). The Meigen (Meygen) family is listed in Solingen among the blade smiths. Rapiers from the late 16th or early 17th century with blades by Clemens Meigen (1566-1638) or Johannes Meigen are in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Livrustkammaren (Stockholm), the Tøjhusmuseet (Copenhagen), the Rüstkammer (Dresden), the museum in Rostov-on-Don, a court sword in the Hällisch Fränkische Museum (Schwäbisch Hall). Strong swords can be found in the English trade (cf. lot 194 Olympia auctions, June 22, 2022), in private collections, especially English ones. The presence of blades by Clemens (son of Clemens?) and Johannes Meigen on English soil is explained by the fact that they emigrated with other craftsmen from Solingen to Hounslow in 1629 at the instigation of Charles I.
